S.W. Erdnase is a noble character. He is one of the King's former inner circle.
Throughout Card Shark[]
He was the one who told Ms. Porterhouse to adopt a mute orphan -the protagonist- as part of his long-planned scheme against MacGregor.
What he did was an accidental murder. He only meant to slip Sophie a sleep-inducing tea, but thanks to MacGregor's machinations, he ended-up poisoning her and killing her.
He was in shock when Louis XV announces that Sophie isn't breathing, as Erdnase had only meant to make her fall asleep with the tea he gave her; instead, he unwittingly poisoned and killed her.
He returns to Versailles twenty years later to exact his revenge on MacGregor.
One of his fates at the end; he's sent to Guyana with the Comte and the protagonist, but he escapes into the jungle, never to be seen again.
Trivia[]
- His disguise as Baronnesse de Beauregard is good enough to fool even the Comte.
- He's seen perfectly capable of running after MacGregor frames him for Sophie's murder then limping in the next scene. Presumably Henri ran after him and gave him a fatal leg injury.
- Not even losing a leg stops him from leading the protagonist and the Comte all the way to the King's card table in Versailles.
- He wears a large dress and uses a walking stick to hide the fact he's missing a leg, while disguising as Baronnesse de Beauregard.
- He is named after the author and magician, S.W. Erdnase.
- S.W. Erdnase was the pseudonym of a magician who authored a book detailing sleight of hand, cheating, and legerdemain with playing cards. Erdnase in the game is an expert at cards, who teaches the protagonist some of the final tricks in the game.
- He also goes by Ireneo Funes, Baronnesse de Beauregard, the King of Thieves, and the Mother Superior at Sophie's bedside.
- He and MacGregor share the trait of being a "man behind a man" towards Louis XV, with both of them working for other nobility behind his back.
